The Long Game is a website for people that want to grow and challenge themselves. It is about the drive to better ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually while having the curiosity to enjoy the journey. I will include articles, podcast, videos, and blogs on a variety of topics ranging from psychology, fitness, meditation, and nutrition.

This One Trait is Vital to Learn and Grow

We are all born with curiosity. As children, our curiosity about the world allowed us to learn and grow. As adolescents, at some point, we started worrying about having all the answers instead of the process of seeking them. As we move into adulthood, if we let it, our curiosity can almost completely disappear. If we lose our curiosity, we lose the ability to learn about new subjects and ourselves.

If we believe we have all the answers, it becomes impossible to learn. The smartest people are always learning, asking questions, and remain curious about what they don’t know. One of the best “bs detectors” is when someone can’t say, “I don’t know.” However, you can tell when they are making up an answer on the spot and unwilling to show their lack of knowledge. Saying “I don’t know” is a sign of humility and curiosity to find the answers to what you’re not sure about. Looking smart gets you nowhere. However, actively seeking answers to what you don’t know will put you on the path to success, fulfillment, and joy.

In terms of learning about ourselves, we can easily get stuck in the pattern of “that is just the way I am.” “Why?” is the question we should be asking ourselves. We are the way we are because of the choices we make and the stories we tell ourselves. If we can become curious about the “Why” behind the things we do, feel or say, we can move from a passive being to an active participant in our life. Curiosity helps us figure out why we do, think, act, feel or say the things we do. Do you always seem to make the same mistakes in life, business, and relationships? Ask yourself, “why?”

Are you willing to spark curiosity about where you’ve been and where you want to go? The next time someone asks you a question you don’t know, can you say, “I don’t know”? This is the first step in the curious mind. Try it out and see where it takes you. Life is not about having all the answers. It is about the journey to seek the answers. In the seeking is where we improve and thrive. I encourage you to stay curious and expand your horizons and those around you.
